A Name Above All Names
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord….
Philippians 2:9-11
Christmas is right around the corner, and for believers in Christ, our focus turns to Jesus and the celebration of His birth. God has placed the name of His Son in such a high, exalted position. Jesus is …the name above all other names.
Christians herald the good news of God’s Only Begotten Son who came into this sinful world. Christmas Carols are sung by congregations in churches across the world. The resounding Gospel message proclaims the name of Jesus and the reason for His birth:
All hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And Crown him Lord of all!
The wonderful name of Jesus reveals His mission. He came for this one solitary purpose––the salvation of mankind. In the Hebrew language, the name Jesus is Joshua, which means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” Jesus came to save sinners. Christmas is the perfect time to tell others there is no need to despair. Jesus came to forgive their sin and to rescue them from Satan’s power, as this 16th Century Carol proclaims:
God rest ye merry gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r
When we were gone astray….
Jesus desires to be your Savior. Why not bend your knees and say a humble prayer of repentance? Express your need for God’s salvation and allow Jesus to come into your heart this Christmas season.
[Jesus] It’s the name that causes our hearts to rejoice and our lips to sing his praise.
