We Have a Better Hope
For He testifies: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
Hebrews 7:17-19
Once again Paul drums home his point into the hearts and minds of Hebrew believers, For He [God] testifies: “You [Jesus] are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” We, too need to understand the deeper meaning of what is being conveyed to us as believers.
Paul went on to explain that the law made no one perfect. Therefore, in that regard, the law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ. When He sacrificed His life on the Cross, He perfected us: For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified (Hebrews 10:14). Our sins were completely removed once and for all. Meditate on the fullness of this revelation, as explained in Hebrews 9:24-28:
For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
This is why we have a far better hope! We can draw near to God with full assurance of eternal life! Jesus is better than the earthly priesthood that existed––better than any other sacrifice. How beautiful that is!
Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation. Joy of every longing heart.
