The Greater Priesthood

For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.  For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar.
Hebrews 7:12-13

Change was necessary. The established way of sacrificing animals according to Jewish, ceremonial laws would be void. In the Scriptures, what tribe of Israel was responsible for the ministry in the Temple? It was the tribe of Levi that was set apart by God for the honorable duties of the priesthood:

Exodus 28:1: “Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to Me as priest, Aaron and Aaron’s sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.”

Numbers 18:6-7: “Behold, I Myself have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; they are a gift to you, given by the Lord, to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. Therefore you and your sons with you shall attend to your priesthood for everything at the altar and behind the veil; and you shall serve. I give your priesthood to you as a gift for service....”

A change well worth noting is that, according to the order of Melchizedek, Jesus would arise as High Priest from a completely different tribe of Israel. From which tribe was Christ chosen? Jesus came from the tribe of Judah, not the tribe of Levi:

Micah 5:2: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”

Notice the change, Jesus was not officiated from any earthly priesthood but an eternal priesthood. Jesus is greater than the earthly priesthood because He has established an everlasting priesthood.

“The Lord has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’ ”
~Hebrews 7:21~
