Our Natural Response to Give
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace....”
Hebrews 7:1-2
Abraham gave a tithe from his heart to Melchizedek, king of Salem, and priest of the Most High God, without even being told what to do. Giving came naturally. Abraham received the spoils of war and gave. It was a natural response honoring the Lord who had blessed him.
Does the giving of tithes come naturally and cheerfully, or do you begrudge giving to God what belongs to Him? The Scriptures teach: So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). You do not give to God because you have to; you give willingly because He has blessed you. Giving is a cheerful response of thanksgiving––worship.
I have found that you cannot ever outgive God. He is faithful to provide for your needs, as Paul the Apostle voiced: God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). King David reflected on this truth: I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread (Psalm 37:25). So beautiful!
I just really want to encourage you, according to the Scriptures, that even Abraham, coming out of idolatry into a relationship with the Lord, knew giving was the honorable thing to do. In the presence of Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, he responded and gave.
How will you respond in the presence of Jesus, your sovereign King of Peace and Righteousness? I am not only speaking of giving to God financially, but what about the value of giving your entire life to serve His Majesty?
We owe God every honor that it is in our power to give Him. Our everlasting grief lies in giving Him anything less.
