Witnessing to the Unconverted
And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”
Acts 2:40
If you witness to others, do not take your family Bible with you! People will see you coming, and they will run! When I was first saved, I bought a big Bible, and a huge Christian fish necklace with Greek letters and a leather strap. I wore it right on my chest. When the sun hit it, the light reflected, and it looked like a huge tuna!
New believers are zealous; it was so exciting to be a Christian in those days. People’s cars were filled with Scriptures. Hippies were never afraid to tell people about Jesus Christ. Seeing God’s love, people readily accepted Jesus. Now the hippies are gone, and the Jesus Movement is a part of Christian history.
It is interesting that when people come to Christ, spiritually grow, develop, and mature, it seems they get smaller Bibles and stickers on their cars. Christians have become more moderate, and some are hesitant to share their faith. Times change and we are living in a different generation, but still so perverse. We have the same Gospel message to share, but it needs to relate to people living in this time-period. Jesus and His disciples connected with people and spoke to them on their level of understanding.
I believe that Christians can become so isolated from sinners in the world. They stay cut off from them and remain only around Christians. There is a failure to reach out to the lost. God help us not to be so isolated. We need to go out of our comfort zones to share the Gospel with sinners––the drunkards, fornicators and adulterers. I do not agree with their sin, but I do look for open doors to witness to them. Seriously, we cannot become so heavenly minded that we become no earthly good to anyone.
David Wilkerson witnessed to Nicky Cruz, a violent gang member. David was a skinny Pentecostal preacher, and yet Nicky was saved. God used Nicky’s life to bring about an amazing revival. I believe, like David, you can be yourself, have an intelligent conversation with a nonbeliever, and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work.
The Christian is the visual aid which God brings on to the stage when he begins to speak at an unconverted person.
