Investing in Eternity

“You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
Haggai 1:6

Are you investing in eternity? Haggai the prophet preached a set of fiery messages from God to stir up the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem. Why? They had failed to build the house of God. They were not investing in eternal things. They were seeking their own selfish comforts. Haggai boldly spoke the Word of the Lord to God’s people. The message he gave was not intended to make them comfortable, but uncomfortable because their priorities were all out of order.

I believe there is nothing wrong with having things. God blesses us financially––with prosperity. We live in America and can thank God for the wealth and prosperity of capitalism. We can work hard and purchase things we want––a house, a car and provisions for our families. But there is always a danger to become comfortable and forget about God.

It is only when our priorities become out of order that major problems can occur. Understand, God must always remain first in our priorities. Do not build your security on wealth, it is fleeting. Our bank accounts cannot be number one. We cannot take any of our wealth with us into eternity, our riches will be left behind––naked we came, and naked we leave this world.

It is important to keep coming into God’s house to worship Him and hear His Word. The Lord will bless us with joy and spiritual prosperity. Life is short; invest in eternity. You can enjoy all the Lord has blessed you with, but do something to invest your time and resources for the furtherance of God’s Kingdom.

What counts in eternity is what we do for Jesus Christ on earth––period.

The seeking of the kingdom of God is the chief business of the Christian life.
