Giving God Excuses

“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ” Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying, “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?”
Haggai 1:2-4

When God’s people returned to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon, there was a need to rebuild the Temple. Instead of giving financially toward the project, what did they do? All their finances and efforts were poured into building their own beautiful, paneled houses.

Their top priority was to build the Lord’s house, but God’s people prioritized self. The Lord had listened to their conversations. They had come back into the land, but talked to each other, saying, “No, it is not the right time to build God’s house.” This was willful disobedience and neglectfulness of duty.

They had obviously made excuses for putting off building God’s house.

It was not a convenient time for them to do so––no, the time to build God’s house had not come. God was very displeased with their excuses. They needed a good examination of their hearts. The message the Lord gave to the prophet Haggai was so they could do just that––reevaluate their priorities and consider their ways.

Did you know that among all of the thousands of people who attend Calvary Chapel, the church is sustained only by about 20% of the people? Most people have not considered giving to God. Can you imagine if the other 80% would give what we could do? Not only would the needs for the ministry be met, the Gospel would also be far-reaching!

Have you made excuses for not giving to God what belongs to Him? God expects obedience in our giving. Obedience––so simple. All it takes is a simple step of faith, trusting that God, in turn, will supply all our needs. Reevaluate your priorities. Make God your first priority and watch Him faithfully provide as He blesses your obedience.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
~Matthew 6:33~
