Violence in the City

When he reached the stairs, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob. For the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”
Acts 21:35-36

Although chained and surrounded by soldiers from the Roman garrison, Paul was still in danger for his life. The furious mob still wanted him dead, and they continued to shout and follow after him. With the help of the Roman soldiers, Paul reached the stairs. There the soldiers literally had to lift him up and carry him to protect him from those in the mob who were still trying to kick and punch him!

You would think that Paul, after suffering a brutal beating and knowing the crowd remained violent with the intent to kill him, would want to get away from the area as quickly as possible; but he was ready to use this opportunity to minister the Gospel to those who opposed him.

In his life, Paul had great discernment. He was so in tune with God’s plan for his life, and he probably discerned that since he was surrounded by so many Roman soldiers, he was safe. Now would be such an opportune time to speak to the people. His heart was moved for the lost––to share with them the hope of eternal life in Christ. Among the crowds, some could be saved! He only had to make the request to the commander, by faith. Oh, how we need more people in the church like Paul!

What would you and I do if we were beaten and had the opportunity to get out of harm’s way? Most of us would want to flee from the danger as fast as we could. Why get killed? There are times when we are called to courageously stay and proclaim the message of Christ, even to our enemies.

We can take persecution because we know the purpose behind it. The purpose is to glorify God.
