Breaking of Bread and Prayer

So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:46-47

The early church broke bread together. They had a time of communion in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice. The bread represents His broken body and the cup is symbolic of His blood shed on the Cross. Before His death, Jesus instituted communion with His disciples. He explained the meaning of the bread and the cup. Interestingly, it also points to His return:

…the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

Here at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs, we take communion once a month. During the communion service––breaking of the bread, partaking of the cup together––brings oneness. Before partaking of communion, every person examines their lives before the Lord––to make sure things are right before Him. Communion should never be taken in an unworthy manner (1 Corinthians 11:27-32). With a clean and open heart, be ready to receive all that God desires to bestow upon your life.

Know this: when we diligently study the Word of God, and are consistent in prayer, then communion and fellowship will naturally become a part of our Christian walk.

No Spiritual Discipline is more important than the intake of God’s Word. Nothing can substitute for it. There simply is no healthy Christian life apart from a diet of the milk and meat of Scripture.
