The Blessing of Tithing

Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives. Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
Hebrews 7:8-10

The established Levitical priesthood received tithes from God’s people. Why was this enacted? Tithing was their inheritance as they did the work of the Lord in the Tabernacle of meeting. They did not inherit land, as did the other tribes of Israel, when they went to battle in Canaan (Numbers 33:54). These two verses below show what God intended for the tribe of Levi:

Deuteronomy 10:9: Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God promised him.

Joshua 13:14: Only to the tribe of Levi he had given no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as He [God] said to them.

In the Old Testament, the people gave 10%. However, in the New Testament, we give sacrificially to the Lord. We are to give willingly and hilariously to the work of the Lord. Giving should be received by the church on the first day of the week–-Sunday (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Keep in mind, the Bible teaches us to give cheerfully from what God has blessed us with:

He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6-7).

It is really important that we understand that God never demands anything from us. God blesses each of us, and it is up to us to pray and give to the Lord whatever amount He has laid upon our hearts. Here at Calvary Chapel we do not take offerings, we receive them. May God bless you with all spiritual blessings as you further His Kingdom by your generous giving.

I judge all things only by the price they shall gain in eternity.
