Communion with God
Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham....
Hebrews 7:4-5
Once again, we continue the interaction between Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, and Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel. The patriarch Abraham had returned from battle after rescuing his nephew Lot from four kings who had plundered Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 14). Even before the priesthood and tithing were established, Abraham gave Melchizedek tithes––a tenth of the spoils from the battle.
It is interesting to see, for the first time, bread and wine, which speak of communion with God. Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abraham and initiated a time of communion and blessing, as God Most High had given Abraham deliverance from his enemies (Genesis 14:18-20).
At the Lord’s Supper, Jesus instituted communion with His Disciples. Believers continue to partake of communion in remembrance of Him:
Then He [Jesus] took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you” (Luke 22:17-20).
The greatest battle was won when Jesus died on the Cross for our sins. He defeated Satan and the power of death. This victory won the blessing of our salvation. Jesus’ death and victory are to be remembered during a time of communion––the bread and the cup. As a family, take time to sit and have communion together. Remember all that Christ has done.
... He Himself [Jesus] likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
