Veterans Day

Blessed be the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle—

Veterans Day was formerly called Armistice Day. November 11 marks the end of World War 1, which happened on November 11, 1918. However, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. Military veterans and should not be confused with Memorial Day, which remembers those who have died in serving our great country.

The high cost of our freedom should never be forgotten. Veterans Day reminds us to pause and remember to honor those men and women from all branches of the military who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. They have fought courageously to keep America free!

As a former Marine, we lived and died by this one important motto: “Until they are home, no man left behind.” We took our dead and wounded with us: no one would be forgotten on the battlefield. Each Marine loyally took care of the man next to him. It was ingrained in us to look out for the welfare of other Marines, as we were brothers in arms.

Recently, in Afghanistan, the unthinkable happened. Due to the swift and botched exit of our armed forces from Afghanistan, many American civilians and those loyal Afghan families who had helped our armed forces were left behind to face an uncertain future––likely death at the hands of the Taliban, a cruel terrorist group.

Thirteen military personnel were killed in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport that reportedly left another 170 Afghanistan civilians––men, women and children––dead. This Veterans Day, let us honor our men and women in all areas of our armed forces. Pray for their families. When you encounter a Veteran, shake their hand and thank them for their dedicated service.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.
