Building Christian Character

...we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:3-5

In the life of a believer, suffering also helps build Christian character. Suffering aids in spiritual growth. Paul the Apostle knew that truth––any tribulations endured would help in building our characters.

I really did not think that I could be sick and grow spiritually in Christ. I thought that to be sick was to waste time. I hate being in bed! I cannot stand being locked up. Then, on this one occasion, the Lord showed me differently. I was laid up in bed on my back in pain when the Lord spoke clearly to my heart, “I have got you right where I want you! I needed to talk to you, but because you are far too busy, I placed you on your back!”

At first, I was frustrated. I did not understand the reason why this was happening to me. I do not always understand the mind of God, but I do trust the Lord. I know He sees the bigger picture. Lying still, he revealed that His plans that are always working things out for the best: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

I know one thing––God is in control of my life. God is great. I have to trust that God knows what He is doing, even if I do not understand all His ways––period:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).

If you find yourself in a place of frustration, lacking understanding for why something has happened to you, trust in the Lord. He is building character and working things out for your best interest.

Being a Christian is more than just an instantaneous conversion – it is a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Christ.
