National Day of Prayer

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior...
1 Timothy 2:1-3

Our nation is in need of revival––a spiritual awakening! This can only happen through prayer. Recently, a movie called The Great Awakening was shown across the nation. It is the amazing story of George Whitefield. His conversion and powerful preaching brought people to their knees. Born in England, Whitefield was banned from preaching in the Church of England’s pulpits. However, he was welcomed to America. In 1738 he preached to crowds of up to 25,000.

It was the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit that miraculously changed people’s lives. What was his message? He cried, “You must be born again!” He preached a personal relationship with God.  During the First Great Awakening, a spark was lit in the halls of America’s government. During the Constitutional Convention arguments were heard among the divided Colonies and the Union was in danger of failing. Benjamin Franklin, who was greatly influenced by Whitefield, spoke out to advocate that daily prayer be reinstated before daily business.

He reminded them to humbly ask the Father of Lights to illuminate their understandings. They did indeed put aside their differences and came together in unity before God. First Timothy 2:1-3 urges Christians to pray, especially for those in places of government authority. Once a year, America is called upon as a nation to pray in unity before God. Earnestly pray for our great nation as Thomas Jefferson did before us:

...Endow with the Spirit of wisdom those who in Thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth....

May America be a God-fearing light to other nations, our churches be filled with sincere praise to our God, and our beautiful land blessed.
