Consequences of Disobedience

In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet....
Haggai 1:1

The book of Haggai is a very interesting book. It is found among the books of the Minor Prophets and only has two chapters. Yet it is a powerful book. The books of the Major Prophets are called so because each book has more chapters.

Before we begin our study in the book of Haggai, we need to go back to find out why God’s people were in captivity in Babylon. Remember, God heard the cry of His people in slavery, and He called Moses to lead them out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Due to their sin of unbelief, a journey that should have taken about 11 days, took 40 years! Only those twenty years old and above would enter the land. A whole generation died in the wilderness, all because they failed to believe in the promises of God.

Moses faced many trials as he led God’s people. The multitudes often murmured and complained. On one occasion, they came against him complaining because there was no water to be found. God told Moses to speak to the rock once, but he lost his temper, spoke instead to the people, and then hit the rock! Understand, God was about to manifest His faithful provision of grace. His people had a bad attitude, but God saw their great need.

Moses, in his anger, grossly misrepresented God; as a result, he could not lead the people into the Promised Land (Numbers 20:7-13). Later, the Lord did graciously allow him to see the Promised Land from Mount Nebo. Afterwards, Moses died and God buried him in an unknown location in Moab (Numbers 27:12-14; Deuteronomy 34:1-6).

It is important to represent God correctly to our children, spouse, friends and coworkers. When we fail to obey God, we dishonor His name. Our rebelliousness and disobedient actions will have consequences.

Disobeying God is the same as telling Him to hold back all of the blessings that come with obedience. That is not only stupidity, its insanity.
