Growing Up in Christ
...that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—
Ephesians 4:14-15
Paul’s teachings were so rich! Remember, the Church is not a building; it is made up of believers in Christ. Famous preacher C.H. Spurgeon gave this insight for why the Church exists:
A church that does not exist to reclaim heathenism, to fight evil, to destroy error, to put down falsehood, a church that does not exist to take the side of the poor, to denounce injustice and to hold up righteousness, is a church that has no right to be. Not for yourself, O church, do you exist, any more than Christ existed for Himself.
Remember, the apostles were the ones called to equip and guide the infant church. They knew believers must come to know God, His character, and His attributes. They needed to be discipled––to grow up in Christ––so they could become equipped for the work of the ministry. God desires to use each one of us to reach the lost with the message of the Gospel.
When Christians do not grow, they remain babes in Christ. Sadly, they may become open to deception due to false doctrines. That is why it is important to become rooted and grounded in God’s Word. It is vital to know Church doctrine, such as abiding in Christ, justification, sanctification, and glorification. That is why God has given us pastor/teachers after his own heart to tend and feed His flock.
God has saved, regenerated, unified and anointed Christians. Know that God’s Word will keep you from deception and heresy. Grow up in Christ, and you will be equipped for every good work that He has for you to do.
Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life? Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully mediate on God’s Word. From such folly deliver us, O Lord.
