The Surety of God’s Word
“The sons of foreigners shall build up your walls, and their kings shall minister to you; for in My wrath I struck you, but in My favor I have had mercy on you.”
Isaiah 60:10
We know that God chose Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. The Lord had placed him in the perfect place, in the presence of King Artaxerxes. Incredibly, God would use a foreign king to help him in the endeavor of rebuilding the walls––that is how God works. King Artaxerxes gave Nehemiah permission to oversee this vast project.
Nehemiah’s call fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah 60:10; and Zechariah 1:12-17, but especially the fulfillment of Daniel 9:25:
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.
Daniel’s words combine the prophetic calendar for the later return of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, with the current events to rebuild the walls. The walls were rebuilt by Nehemiah and the people in 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15-16). God’s Word is sure––it always comes to pass.
Psalm 102:13-14 is yet another prophetic word from the Lord. After Jerusalem was destroyed, and the people went into captivity for seventy years in Babylon, God promised mercy. He would restore the city of Zion:
You [God] will arise and have mercy on Zion; for the time to favor her, yes, the set time, has come. For Your servants take pleasure in her stones, and show favor to her dust.
The Lord has given many promises to Israel that are also true for a sinner who repents. The walls of their broken life can be rebuilt: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt...” (Jeremiah 31:3-4).
Do you need God to rebuild your life? He is able to do it.
When we get to the end of ourselves, we get to the beginning of God.
