The Kind of Love Jesus Has

Let brotherly love continue.
Hebrews 13:1

As Paul ended the book of Hebrews, he exhorted the Hebrew believers to continue having brotherly love. I love how Paul previously explained in 1 Corinthians 13:2 that love is far more important than spiritual gifts:

...though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Imagine having the power to move a mountain into the sea?  But without love, it is an empty power. There are a lot of Christians today who are empty––loveless. They profess to be believers, but when it comes to the love of God, they do not give it out. They show no love in their care for others; instead, they are so covetous and selfish.

In 1 Corinthians 13:3, Paul wrote about how empty our giving is without the love of Christ: And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor ... but have not love, it profits me nothing. If you went to Mexico, and you helped the poor, you might have thought, Hey, I have done a good deed!  But if you failed to have love in your actions, then you wasted your time. Without love, it was of no value. What is your motive behind your actions? The motive always has to be love.

In everything we do and in everything we say, we must express the love of Christ.  In 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, Paul described for us what love truly is: Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked.... I love that.

If I put my name in the place of “love” in this verse, people would see how I failed to meet the standard of Christ-like love. Nor would it work if you placed your name in those verses! But if you put the name of “Jesus” in there, it would definitely work! Why? Jesus is the essence of love. May God help us by His Spirit to be more like Jesus.

No man ever loved like Jesus. He taught the blind to see and the dumb to speak. He died on the cross to save us. He bore our sins. And now God says, because He did, I can forgive you.
