The Saving of a Household
“And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ ”
Acts 11:13-14
Peter retold of how God had sent an angel to Cornelius to tell him to send men to Joppa and call for Peter, whose words had the capability to not only save him, but all of his household. No wonder Cornelius went and invited his relatives and close friends to his house. The Lord had touched his heart to invite them to hear Peter’s words of salvation.
In the Bible, we see occasions when an entire household was saved. In the Old Testament, Joshua sent two spies into Jericho. When the spies entered the home of Rahab, she not only gave a profession of her faith in God, she had a heart to see her family saved from imminent destruction:
“...for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a true token, and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death” (Joshua 2:11-13).
In the New Testament, Paul and Silas were in jail for their faith. While praying and singing, an earthquake struck, and the prison doors were opened. They could escape! The centurion, knowing he was responsible for the prisoners, assumed they had escaped and decided to take his own life. Paul called out and said: “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here” (Acts 16:28). The centurion asked a question that everyone should ask: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30).
Have you been brought to a point of desperation in your life where you have called out to be saved? The answer given to the centurion is exactly what you and your family need to do: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
We can receive Jesus Christ when we believe in His message and trust in Him alone to save us.
