Strengthened with Inner Might

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man....
Ephesians 3:14-16

Paul’s prayer was specifically for knowledge and strength––power. He prayed for the Ephesian church, as they needed strength to endure the attacks of Satan. Through prayer, they needed to ask for the power of the Holy Spirit so their inner man would be strengthened.

What about us? In the evil times we live in today, we need to ask God, according to His riches, to be strengthened in our inner man. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to live the Christian life! When we prayer, what should our position be? Should we be praying on our knees, standing, sitting, walking or lying down? The important thing to remember is when you pray, it is the position of the heart that matters.

So why is it that we often pray with our eyes closed? For many people, as a child, in Sunday school, the teacher may have asked you to bow your head and close your eyes to pray. This was done to avoid distractions. Little Johnny would not think about pulling little Susie’s hair! The teacher had the children’s full attention. Yet I know that if I close my eyes to pray, it is not too long before I begin to doze off! Interestingly, in the Scriptures, when Jesus prayed, He often prayed with His eyes open––not closed.

Notice, in his prayer, Paul spoke of us as a family on earth, and also as a family with those awaiting us in heaven. I can hardly wait to see my family and friends in eternity. In heaven in eternity, you will not have to ask questions––we shall know everything. Heaven is a wonderful place, and we want to share with others––share the love and mercy of Christ––so they can be there too!

Prayer requires more of the heart than of the tongue.
