Trust in the Living God

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
1 Timothy 6:17

Again, Paul gave another exhortation to those who are rich. They were not to become haughty. Often those who are rich become proud; they stick their noses up in the air and look down on other people. They have acquired so many material things in their lives and feel superior to people who are less fortunate. They feel that poorer people are beneath them.

Some wealthy people have such a bad attitude, as if they are God’s gift to the world. They drive around in luxurious cars and wear flashy jewelry and expensive clothing. Their trust is in their bank accounts, investments and credit cards. These things are uncertain riches. Why? The stock market can be very volatile, and the housing market can crash. Look at the major destruction that happens during fires, floods, earthquakes and tornadoes. Homes, cars and everything material can suddenly be wiped off the map! Everything they own can be destroyed in an instant.

In an unpredictable world, people need to place their trust in the Living God. Christians should live their lives with an eternal viewpoint, knowing that temporal things can fade away. Living in Christ means we have attained spiritual riches. We have God’s grace and the promise of eternal life: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).

God has given us all things to enjoy during our journey on earth. Look at what He has blessed you with. Think about it. You have been blessed with your family, friends and your possessions. Besides, what about the beauty of God’s creation? You do not have to be rich to appreciate the majestic mountains or the beauty of the beaches and oceans. There is a cascade of other scenic places around the world to see.

Will you choose today to place your trust in the Living God? It will make an enormous difference in the way you live your life.

Poverty is hard, but those who trust in the Lord are made rich by faith.
~C. H. Spurgeon~
