A Good Reputation

At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.
Acts 9:36-37

Dorcas was a very kind and loving woman. Her name in the Greek language means “a gazelle.” It is an emblem of beauty. Its Hebrew translation is Tabitha. As a Christian, Dorcas used her talent of sewing and her own means of supplying thread and materials to make clothing to purely bless others. She had joy in helping others.

The virtuous woman perfectly describes Dorcas’ character. Her life had fulfilled these verses: She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands (Proverbs 31:13). She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy (Proverbs 31:19-20).

Dorcas had such a good reputation, and her death caused much sorrow in the community. Lovingly, Dorcas’ body was washed, perfumed and laid to rest in an upper room, waiting for burial. In Jewish culture, they usually buried a person that very same day.

As a Christian, it is important to have a good name in your community. It is essential to leave behind a good legacy. After your death, consider what kind of testimony will be left behind. What will others say about you at your funeral?

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.
~Proverbs 22:1~
