The Chief Cornerstone

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone....
Ephesians 2:19-20

Paul the Apostle spoke of the unity among believers. Before Christ came there was a great separation between the Jews and the Gentiles. The Jews used to hate the Gentiles. In Old Testament times, God had elected a people. It was through the lineage of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that the Jewish people were established. God intended that the nation of Israel was to evangelize the Gentiles, but they failed.

When Paul preached the Gospel, he proclaimed in Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek [Gentile]. Though Christ, the Jews and Gentiles are now made one people. Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners; they are brothers and sisters in Christ––spiritual Jews. Both Jews and Gentiles are no longer required to do rituals––the Law. Christ fulfilled the Law so Jew and Gentile alike can enjoy God’s grace and mercy.

All racial distances and divisions have been overcome by Jesus Christ. Those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior are in complete unity. In Christ, we are one big family––fellow citizens of heaven. We are one body through one Spirit (Ephesians 2:14-16). Believers from all over the world are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints––those set apart for God.

Who is the Chief Cornerstone? Jesus Christ is the Chief Cornerstone. A building is aligned with the cornerstone. It is the first stone laid in the foundation. As Christians, our lives are to be aligned with Christ.

“Behold, I [God] lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
