We are God’s Workmanship
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10
Paul told the Ephesian believers that they were God’s workmanship. What does the word workmanship mean? It is the Greek word poiema. This is where we get our English word “poem.” Can you believe that! We have become God’s “poem,” something of beauty. What does God see in us? The incredible beauty of His grace, mercy and love.
As we look in the mirror at our reflection, some of us feel discontented, but God sees us differently than how we see ourselves. Other people may see us and not think much about us at all. Men are very judgmental and critical. God is not. He does not differentiate between the tall or small, the handsome or the plain-looking person. It does not matter to God. He loves us all. As Christians, we have become His special people.
It is important to understand that you were not saved to sit down in church, worship, pray, and read your Bible. God has created you for good works! When there is true salvation and true faith, then there are true works! God wants you to be productive in your Christian life. Why? One day Christians will be judged for their works at the Bema Seat of Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11-15).
Believers will stand before the Lord, not to be judged for their sins, as Christ took the punishment for sin on the Cross, but for their motives in the works accomplished on earth. Depending on the value, our works will either survive the fire or be burned up in the fire. As we know these things, we should give of ourselves and of our time to serve the Lord. Get involved––do not remain inactive.
The word prepared means “ordained.” God had us in His thoughts, and through us, He desires to manifest His grace, love and mercy to a world in darkness––a lost world. People can see us as the trophy of Jesus Christ as we serve Him.
God neither chose them or called them because they were holy, but He called them that they might be holy, and holiness is the beauty produced by His workmanship in them.
