Is Your Life in Subjection to God?
Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.
Hebrews 12:9-10
If a child grows up without any kind of discipline, they will become unruly and rebellious. The Bible instructs: Chasten your son while there is hope, and do not set your heart on his destruction (Proverbs 19:18). Lack of discipline will ruin children. Did your father correct you as a child when you did something wrong? When a child is chastened, they know that their parents love them enough to correct them. If you had a parent who never disciplined you, then you may have felt they really did not love you because they seemingly did not care about your rebellious ways.
How many of us have come back to thank our parents for their discipline, especially after we became parents ourselves? We came to realize what we have put our parents through! Some of us may have apologized to them and asked for forgiveness for the ways we acted as a teenager. We also appreciate the discipline we received, because we grew to understand how much our parents loved and cared for us.
Our heavenly Father loves us, and He will discipline us as sons or daughters. When we go astray, like a shepherd with his staff, God corrects us. Chastening moves us back in line with His will. Why does He do this? I cannot say it enough––because He loves us! Now if we show respect to our earthly fathers who discipline us, then how much more should we show respect to our heavenly Father––the Father of our spirits––whose desire is to give us the gift of eternal life.
Knowing this, I ask you, “Is your life in subjection to God?” Through His loving discipline, why not learn the lessons God is trying to teach you? Do not resent His chastening hand upon your life, because He has your best interest at heart.
Submission… involves getting rid of everything which hinders God’s control over our lives.
