Mother’s Day

...forsake not your mother's teaching....
Proverbs 1:8 ESV

In loving devotion, a mother pours her life into the lives of her children. A godly mother will teach her offspring God’s ways. She will take every opportunity to train them in His precepts. Mothers constantly pray. They are on their knees interceding for their children, well into their adulthood. She desires the best life for them––for them to walk with God and to be blessed by Him.

In the Bible, we find such devoted mothers who trained up their children to know God. They willingly sacrificed their time to diligently teach them God’s Word. These faithful women greatly influenced their children: Jochebed instructed Moses, and he became a deliverer of God’s people. Bathsheba tutored Solomon, and he became Israel’s wisest king. Eunice taught young Timothy God’s Word and passed on to him her genuine faith. She gave her son a biblical foundation, and, because of this, the great Apostle Paul took Timothy under his wing. Timothy became a young pastor (2 Timothy 1:5-7).

If you have a God-fearing mother who has diligently poured into your life the wonderful treasures of God’s Word, then you have so much to be thankful for. Her godly influence has led you on a path to know God and the way of His salvation. She has marked a path for you to follow. Will you walk that path? It will honor her and bring her joy. Although in context, the Apostle John spoke these words to those he had begotten in the Christian faith as his children; it also expresses a mother’s desire for her children: I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth (3 John 4). For mothers, there is nothing more important than that.

This Mother’s Day, reflect on your mother’s sacrifices. In appreciation for her dedication, why not spend time with her? Show her how much she is loved. Perhaps your mother is not a believer; still honor her because, through your loving example, she may come to know Christ.

Never could it be possible for any man to estimate what he owes to a godly mother.
