A Lost Generation
When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Judges 2:10
After the death of Joshua, it was not long before the Children of Israel slid backwards into a cycle of sin. In the book of Judges, which is often called the book of apostasy, we read: In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes (Judges 17:6; Judges 21:25). This continues to be a popular philosophy of the world we live in today––just do your thing––do what you please.
God raised up judges to rebuke Israel, to exhort them, and to lead them back to worship the Lord, but as soon as they died, Israel fell away from God and worshipped Baal and the other gods of the land. One of Israel’s major faults was the parents’ and grandparents’ failures in teaching their children and grandchildren about God. They became so busy with their lives that they failed to disciple them.
This is a big problem today; from generation to generation, there is a failure to teach children. I am a first generation Christian. When I got saved, I committed my life fully to Jesus Christ. For a time, I lost my mother, father, sisters and many of my friends. I was on fire for God, just like many other first generation Christians who had a desire to obey and serve God.
Christians in the second generation tend to become slack. Going to church becomes more like a religion. They go to church once in a while, but they do not take their relationship with Christ seriously. The third generation rebels, saying in their hearts, “Forget God, I do not need Him. I will live as I please.” They choose to reject the God of their parents and grandparents. These children grow up to be self-willed, making the decision to trust in themselves.
What attitude do you have toward God? Are you doing what you feel is right in your own eyes? Or are you still zealously serving Him?
Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
~Proverbs 26:12~
