Faith, the Substance of Our Hope

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
Hebrews 11:1-2

Hebrews 11 constitutes one of the Church's most-loved portions of Scripture. This passage has such incredible insights about faith. That is why every believer who comes to faith in Jesus Christ should read it. This incredible chapter gives us a panoramic view of Old Testament history, starting from the beginning of creation. It introduces to us key people and highlights their involvement in significant events from the past.

In this well-known chapter, we also find examples of God's grace at work in the lives of men and women of faith. It records their strengths, but also reveals their weaknesses. References are made of unnamed people who endured terrible trials and persecution. They all are part of Old Testament, ancient, biblical history. In the 21st century, these courageous men and women of faith are still studied. They have become great examples to us, and their lives are a great encouragement for generations to come.

Many times, people think Christianity is smooth sailing––not so. When we accept Jesus Christ, we enter into a spiritual battle. The devil hates us, and we will be tried and tested. Whenever you are feeling depressed––like you are losing hope and faith––read and reread this chapter. Know that your character is being developed. Trials cause you to be stretched, and you will grow. As you remain in the Word of God, you will be successful.

We are God's people, and we need to learn about faith. We all need to have hope and faith in the promises of God. The Lord desires to use each one of our lives, so we need to learn from the lessons of faith taught in Hebrews 11. May your faith in Christ Jesus increase more and more as you depend on the Holy Spirit's work in your life.

Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the windows which hope has opened.
