Christ Holds Everything Together
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist....
Colossians 1:17
Jesus Christ is God. Christ’s deity has repeatedly been challenged; this is the battleground of New Testament theology. In Colosse, the Gnostics and Judaizers attacked the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and we need to study it to know sound theology. Theo is the Greek word used for “God.” Theology is the study God, His nature, character and holiness––to know God.
Consider what the Apostle Paul revealed about Jesus. He is Creator of heaven and earth, having all the powers of creative activity. In the Greek language, the words and in Him all things consist become much clearer to us as it translates to “everything is held together.” All atoms, protons, cells, planets, stars and the entire universe are held together by Jesus Christ our Creator. The moment He lets go, everything will become catastrophic. Jesus sustains everything; He is in control of every system. Without Him it would be impossible to exist.
Jesus is also the Head of the Church––not the Pope or any other person. Without Christ as the Head, there would be no body––believers in Christ. Christ as the Head of the Church unifies us (Ephesians 1:22). Each believer has their own function within the body (1 Corinthians 12-14).
When Jesus died and resurrected, He conquered death and became the firstborn from the dead. The word firstborn means “first in order.” Jesus is to be first in our lives. He has to have Lordship––preeminence. What is preeminent in your life? Is it your wife, children, job or anything else that you have placed foremost in your life? Nothing should pull you away from your first priority––the worship of Jesus Christ. He has to be your first priority so that you can become spiritually strong.
He is preeminent in creation because He is the Creator. He is preeminent in redemption for He is the Redeemer. He is preeminent in the church because He is the One who gave Himself for the church.
