Keeping Your Priorities
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16
Paul gave Christians essential priorities to keep. First, they needed to let the Word of God dwell in them richly. The word dwell means “abide or remain.” Christians are to consistently attend a Bible study to learn about the amazing wisdom of God. That is very important, because through the study of God’s Word, we will grow and mature in Christ.
Understand, the greatest wealth we can have in this life is the riches of the wisdom of God’s Word. We are to hide God’s Word in our hearts: Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You (Psalm 119:11). We are to heed God’s Word: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word (Psalm 119:9).
Believers must handle and hold the Word of God for themselves: Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV), ...holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ... (Philippians 2:16). I encourage you to feed upon the Word of God daily, mediate on it, and obey it; listen to the Word of God so it becomes a part of your daily life.
Secondly, believers are to admonish one another by singing hymns and spiritual songs to the Lord. Christians rejoice in the knowledge of salvation––their sins are forgiven! No longer is there any guilt or condemnation. As we think about the power and glory of God, we freely worship the Lord by singing hymns and spiritual songs from our hearts.
Many times, believers become overcome with emotion as they praise God for His goodness. Thankfulness is expressed in song for His mercy and His love. They weep in devoted worship, singing with grace in their hearts to the Lord.
True worship is a blend of godly fear and trembling together with joy that we are accepted in the Beloved.
