The Danger of Drawing Back
“For yet a little while, and He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”
Hebrews 10:37-38
This Scripture in Hebrews is a strong exhortation about the coming of the Lord. Some people have questioned, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep [died], all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation” (2 Peter 3:4). Jesus is coming; it is just a matter of time: “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches...” (Revelation 16:15).
The Bible gives us assurance and hope of Jesus’ return. Expectancy of His coming causes us to be careful and wise in how we live our lives. We should not be careless with our time. We need to redeem the time: See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-16). What a great exhortation! Jesus could come tonight; He could come tomorrow or the next day. You see, we need to be aware and live in anticipation of Jesus’ coming, as we do not know the day or hour of His return. What is important is to be ready when He returns.
How should we live our lives? Hebrews 10:38 tells us how to live our lives by stating what is written in Habakkuk 2:4: “The just shall live by his faith.” This is our great statement of faith! It is also written in the book of Romans: “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). We are to trust God by faith; our Christian walk is to be exercised by faith in Jesus Christ.
We are all left with a serious warning that needs to be underlined in our Bibles: “...but if anyone draws back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” Do you hear the message? Do not draw back from being a Christian. Do not draw back from having the Holy Spirit indwelling your life. Do not draw back into the life you used to live––back to living a life of sin—to apostasy. It is as if you are spitting in the face of God.
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work...”
