The Reason for Divorce

“But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.”
Matthew 5:32

Many people ask if there is a legitimate reason for getting a divorce. The Scripture tells us that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). Jesus gave the reason for divorce––it was not for just any cause––it was for sexual immorality. However, even if there has been adultery, keep in mind that a wife or husband can forgive their spouse and choose to remain married.

There are people who are married today who are living lives of adultery. Jesus taught that if a person divorced for any reason, other than sexual immorality, and they got remarried, then in the eyes of God, that person is now living in adultery. Maybe living in adultery is not the unpardonable sin, but in the Scriptures, Jesus has set a serious precedence of keeping our marriage vows. There needs to be a renewed fear of God in people’s lives. The marriage union is sacred.

Consider what God has said in His Word before acting hastily to divorce your husband or wife. Never take action based on your emotions or your fleshly desires. God hates divorce.

However, there are legitimate situations for a divorce, such as physical or emotional abuse. First, a time of separation is needed to allow God to work. A wife needs to wait upon God to see if there has been a true change of heart in her husband’s life. If there has been no change, I believe there is a legal right to divorce. I do not think a woman should be abused––God does not want a wife or her children to be destroyed in an abusive marriage.

Divorce tells us the truth about man. It tells us nothing about marriage.
