Faith in Action
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.
Hebrews 11:23
Nearly everyone knows Moses. Even non-believers from all over the world have watched the Ten Commandments. Hollywood did a good job!
In the book of Exodus, due to a terrible famine, 72 people from Joseph’s family went out from Canaan to Egypt and dwelt there. God blessed His people, and they multiplied to about 3.5 million Hebrews. When Pharaoh died, another arose and placed the Hebrews into harsh bondage.
Pharaoh saw the Hebrews were having too many babies, and they were repopulating and becoming mightier than the Egyptians. His concern was the Hebrews would join their enemies in times of war. Pharaoh ordered the midwives that when the Hebrew women gave birth to baby boys, they must be thrown into the Nile River. God decided that this was the time when Moses was to be born.
Moses' father and mother, Amram and Jochebed, feared God, not man. They hid Moses for three months. When he could not be hidden any longer, Jochebed made him a little basket––an ark made of bulrushes. She made sure it was waterproof before placing her baby inside. By faith, she placed the ark by the river’s bank. The Nile River had crocodiles and hippopotamuses! Yet, by faith, she placed her son in the hands of God.
In the water, God led the ark, and, at the perfect timing, Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe at the river. Jochebed’s faith was rewarded; the princess had compassion for the child, and drew him out of the water. Incredibly, as Moses’ sister, Miriam, was watching over her little brother. She approached the princess and asked if she would like her to fetch a nursemaid for the baby. Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Go,” and who did Miriam bring? Moses’ mother! Imagine that!
When you fear the Lord, which means “to stand in awe” of who He is, you know God is the One in control of your life, and, by faith, you will not be afraid to put your faith into action.
We can be in our day what the heroes of faith were in their day––but remember at the time––they didn’t know they were heroes.
