Dead to Sin
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
Colossians 3:5-7
Paul established the position of the believer in Christ. They were to be dead to sin, but alive in Christ––walking in the newness of a resurrected life. As Jesus was Lord over their lives, they no longer lived a life of habitual sin doing as they pleased. Paul raised this fundamental issue with questions in Romans 6:1, when he said: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
Paul narrowed down his answer to a resounding––no! He eliminated their faulty thinking and gave his reason in Roman 6:2: Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Christians must not have the mindset that the more they sin, the more God’s grace abounds. We cannot cheapen the grace of God by continuing to live a life of sin. God will not continue to extend His grace.
God loves the sinner, but He hates sin. A Christian cannot continue to live the way they used to live before they came to Jesus Christ. They have been changed by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. A believer has the same earthly body, but spiritually, they have had a change of heart and mind and have become a child of the kingdom of God.
A child of God is a brand new person who is now submitted and governed by the Lordship of Jesus Christ. A true child of God cannot continue to practice sin because of the conviction of the Holy Spirit. There is no way they can feel comfortable and at ease with sin, once they have been set free from the power of sin (Romans 6).
Christians are sons of obedience––not disobedience. Be dead to sin and forsake your old way of life. Follow Jesus Christ––it is as simple as that.
It was sin that made our bodies mortal ... therefore do not yield obedience to such an enemy.
