The Lamp of the Body

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Matthew 6:22-23

Jesus warned His disciples to keep guard over their eyes. If they guarded their eyes and did not see impure things, they would protect their souls. Understand, the eye is the entrance to the soul. Those who belong to Christ needed to be careful about the things they allowed into their lives through the eyes.

Christians, be careful about what you allow your eyes to see––it will keep your life pure. Lustful magazines are appealing; the images catch a person’s eyes and bind them into a problem with lust. They will not be satisfied with only looking at images; they will want more and more. Lust always leads to sin (James 1:15). Look away from sinful things and find something else to do!

The nature of the heart is evil, and evil can possess you if you allow it (Jeremiah 17:9). Think of how many young people have been destroyed by looking at dirty pictures and movies. In our society, people flip through television channels and stop to view programs like MTV. Even commercials are sexually appealing. Sex sells. If you go into Hollywood, your heart will be broken because you will see how many young men and women have been seduced into prostitution––it is sad. How great is that darkness?

Even some radio stations have music that appeals to a person’s flesh––carnal desires. Be careful. Do not be influenced by any of these things. May we see and hear only the things that you want to show us and ears to hear what is best for us.

When the eyes of the soul looking out, meet the eyes of God looking in, heaven has begun right here on this earth.
