A Faith That Multiplies

Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
Hebrews 11:12

Sarah gave birth to Isaac at the age of 90. She lived and enjoyed being with her son for 37 years and died at the age of 127. Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born, and at that ripe old age, he was described as good as dead. Seriously, not many people live to be that old, but Abraham lived a long and prosperous life––a total of 175 years!

This is the sum of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people (Genesis 25:7-8).

Abraham was blessed to see his great-grandchildren. Isaac married Rebecca at the age of 40 and had twin sons––Jacob and Esau. He was also blessed to see the beginnings of his family who would multiply as the stars in the sky! God had changed the name of Abram to Abraham, which in the Hebrew language means “father of a multitude.” The twelve tribes of Israel and King David would come from his lineage.

Through Abraham’s lineage would also come the promised Messiah––Jesus Christ. We can trace this line of redemption from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all the way to Jesus (Matthew 1:17). It is truly incredible to see Christ’s history unfold throughout the ages. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all died in faith. It is very important to understand the thread of names listed in Hebrews 11. Understand, Isaac and Jacob were joint heirs with Abraham, having the same promise.

It is through Christ that we, too, become heirs of a promise––And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:29). Think about it. We are among the multitudes according to faith in Christ.

Every promise of God’s Word belongs to all those who have faith to grasp it.
