Casting Away Your Confidence in Christ
Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise....
Hebrews 10:35-36
Paul tried to reason with the Hebrews to help them see how futile it was to lose what they had so richly gained in Christ. Earlier in Hebrews 3:14, he had encouraged them: For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.... The Christian life has a beginning and an end––it is a journey to be completed: Therefore [Paul reasoned] do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.
The Hebrew believers were exhorted by Paul to have endurance. They had begun well, but they needed to finish well. Why should they lose their heavenly reward by giving up when things began to become tough or when Judaizers were trying to turn them away from their faith in Christ?
Listen, hold on to your confidence in Christ, and do not cast it away so easily. It has great reward. Never forget who you are in Christ because of all Jesus has done for you. He died on the Cross to secure your salvation. When you die, where are you going? You gain your eternal inheritance that is reserved in heaven for you. Remember, this world is not your home; you have a place in heaven––it is your home.
What else is needed in your Christian walk? There is a great need for endurance in your walk with Christ. Life is not always easy as a Christian, but what is promised after you have done the will of God on earth? You will receive the promise of eternal life––the promise of everlasting joy and comfort.
Ask yourself, “Will I finish well?” Do you want to hear Jesus say at the end of your journey, “Well done thy good and faithful servant”? Christian, do not grow weary or be persuaded by others to walk away from your God. You have started so well. I remind you again, do not cast away your confidence in Christ. End well and receive your reward.
Knowing we will be with Christ forever far outweighs our burdens today! Keep your eyes on eternity.
