A Journey of Faith
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Hebrews 11:8
I love Abraham. Do you know why? It is because I can really relate to him; he was just like me––a sinner. Abraham’s father worshiped the moon; as a family, they were idolaters. Yet God called Abraham, “Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1). Then he started his journey of faith. We were all sinners before we were saved and began our journey of faith in Christ.
Interestingly, if you trace Noah and his son Shem’s lineage, it leads us to Abram (Genesis 11:10-26). It is so important to understand that through Abram, whose name was changed to Abraham, the Jewish nation was birthed. Abraham became the Father of the Jewish nation. In Genesis 12:1-3, we read the blessings of the Jewish nation:
“Get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 12:4 records Abraham’s obedience to the call of God: ...Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him.... But he took Lot, his nephew, and many others with him. Abraham heard the voice of the Lord, and, by faith, obeyed the call without even knowing where he was going. That is real faith!
Have you started your journey of faith? Think of how many people hear the call of God to go, but before taking a step of faith, they want everything mapped out for them. They want the job, the house, and car already planned out. It does not always work that way. God often leads you step by step. He will be with you, leading and guiding you, but you first have to take a step of faith, without knowing all the details––trusting and believing in the promises of God.
The Christian experience, from start to finish, is a journey of faith.
