Are You Looking for Attention?
...not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
Paul continued to address a woman’s modesty in the way she dressed. Wearing the latest fashions––costly clothes, trendy hairstyles, and expensive jewels can bring a woman a lot of attention for sure, but Paul placed the emphasis not on the outward appearance, but on the inward heart of a woman. Her beauty was her godliness, seen in her actions of good works.
Lately, some girls are wearing the latest fashions in church––tight jumpsuits that leave nothing to the imagination. There is no shame anymore. During the hippie movement in the 1960s-1970s, young Christian men had a real concern because the young women were not wearing bras. The men asked if I could teach from the pulpit to correct the problem. However, I am not the Holy Spirit.
At Calvary Chapel, as we study the Bible systematically, and come across these topics, the Holy Spirit will convict people. It is the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. It is important to pray, because God is the One who changes people’s hearts and attitudes. But I will say to women, if you are coming to church and dressing sensually, what is your purpose for that? Christian women can be the most beautifully dressed women in the world, but they are not to dress worldly––seductively.
First Peter 3:3-4, gives women the right perspective on beauty. Again, it is not outward, it is inward beauty:
Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
God has created women for men, and men do find women to be beautiful. But more importantly, may they also be attracted to a woman’s heart––a woman professing godliness with good works.
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
~Proverbs 31:30~
