Taking Courage
And from there, when the brethren heard about us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
Acts 28:15
The Christian church in Rome was well established. When Paul arrived near Rome, news spread, and some brethren sought to see their beloved teacher. He had written the letter to the Romans from the city of Corinth, while on his third missionary journey. He personally knew some of them. The brethren traveled to the Appii Forum, a small marketplace on the Appian Way, about 40 miles southeast of Rome. Paul was familiar with this route as he had traveled this way from Puteoli to Rome.
Some brethren would have rested at the Three Inns or Taverns also on the Appian Way, about 30 miles from Rome. In actuality, there were three shops––the general store, the blacksmith, and a “refreshing house.” It was a perfect place for travelers to meet. They traveled miles to see Paul, having a deep love for him. They were a great encouragement to the Apostle. He thanked God for them and took courage.
When I have traveled to different places––Israel, Chile, Colombia or China––some Christians I have met before, but others I have not known. Still, there is a familiarity and oneness between us. Even though we may not speak the same language, they communicate the love of Christ through their actions and expressions. I have felt so comfortable with them. We encourage each other in the Lord. When I have left them behind, at times, I have cried. You never know if you will ever see them again.
Pray about taking a missionary trip. God can use you to lift the spirits of persecuted believers, a suffering saint, or a discouraged Christian. Your companionship, fellowship and prayers will encourage them. A visit can help them to take courage for what they may face in the future.
It is a great thing to see physical courage, and greater still to see moral courage, but the greatest to see of all is spiritual courage; oh, to see a person who will stand true to the integrity of Jesus Christ no matter what he or she goes through!
