Dress with Modesty in Mind

...in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation....
1 Timothy 2:9

Paul addressed the roles of men and women in the church. It is important not to compromise God’s Word when speaking on these issues. There is value in church doctrine and church order––the way churches are to be administrated. Remember, Timothy was a young minister and he needed Paul’s fatherly instruction.

It is thought that some of the women began to try to take the authority over men for positions in the church. In today’s society, there are some very aggressive women who really try to dominate their husbands. Scripture tells us that the husband is to be the head of his home. There are also men who try to lord over their wives. There has to be a mutual submission to one another in the fear of God (Ephesians 5:21).

Each spouse has different roles. A husband is to love his wife just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it, and the wife should submit to her husband as unto the Lord (Ephesians 5:22-25). If you have a husband and wife in rebellion––where the woman wants to rule over her husband, and the husband is timid and fails to take the leadership of his home––then there will be major problems in the marriage.

In wisdom, Paul also turned to the subject of women’s modesty. Women in the church were dressing seductively, and the problem needed to be addressed. The emphasis here was not to purchase a whole new wardrobe; the point was modesty. When attending church, or going to work or college, think about what you are going to wear and ask yourself this simple question: Are you dressing to impress men so they can lust after you? It is not right to make men stumble.

When you go to church, the way you dress should bring honor to your husband, family, and, most of all, honor and glory to Jesus Christ. Christian women can dress beautifully and modestly.

Modesty means to be free from undue familiarity, from indecency, from lewdness, pure in thought and conduct. Speaking of modest apparel, it means decent, seemly. The opposite of modesty is conceit, boldness, immodesty, brazenness, lewdness.
