The Walk of Faith
By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
Hebrews 11:5
Faith is not a feeling. It is an action. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:24). What testimony did Enoch have in his walk with God? The answer is simple, “...he pleased God.” The name Enoch in the Hebrew language means “dedicated.” He was dedicated to God––a genuine man of faith. What is amazing is that God took him away; he did not taste death––he never died! In the Bible, when Enoch was taken away, it became a type of the Rapture of the Church.
Enoch was an interesting fellow because there is not a lot written about him. He is mentioned by name in Genesis 5, in Hebrews 11, and one more time in the book of Jude:
Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these [ungodly] men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him” (Jude 14-15).
It is believed by scholars that Enoch is one of the two witnesses mentioned before Jesus’ Second Coming: “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth” (Revelation 11:3). Afterwards, they are both killed, but God will raise them from the dead:
Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them [the two witnesses], and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them (Revelation 11:11).
Enoch’s testimony was that he pleased God. What is your testimony? Put your faith in action. Do you seek to please God with your life?
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith will get me anything, take me anywhere in the kingdom of God; but without faith there can be no approach to God, no forgiveness, no deliverance, no salvation, no communion, no spiritual life at all.
