When Faith Nearly Slips
Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
Psalm 73:1-3
Asaph looked around and saw how the wicked were prospering. They had health and wealth! They were strong and carefree, having no worries, and they seemingly lived above all the calamities of the godly. His faith nearly slipped. Asaph described their pride as a necklace and their violence as a garment. Their greedy eyes bulged with everything they could possibly accumulate. They had more than they could ever wish for (Psalm 73:4-7).
Asaph noticed that with their mouths they spoke loftily and scoffed against God. They drained resources from others, saying, “How does God know?” “Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They were filled with such ease (Psalm 73:8-12). Asaph, in his discouragement, questioned, “Does God really see what I do? Does He really keep a record? Is He really aware?” He felt as if the chastening hand of God was always on his life.
Maybe some of you are discouraged because you feel God is against you and not for you. Lack of finances, illnesses, or family issues cause you to doubt God. Seeing the ungodly prospering causes your faith to diminish, and it leads you to a place where you feel downcast. Why is it that the wicked never seem to struggle, when your life is caving in?
This is exactly how the psalmist Asaph, felt. He was very discouraged. When you see the wicked prosper by pulling into their driveway with their luxury car and entering the lavish doorway to their expensive home, it almost causes your steps to stumble. Why do the wicked have more money and abundance of elegant clothes, bags and shoes? You may question, “Is it really worth it to serve and suffer for God in this life?”
It was not until Asaph entered the house of the Lord that he understood the end of the wicked (Psalm 73:17). Their future is bleak! They will be brought to desolation and, in a moment––slide down a slippery slope to eternal destruction. The God-fearing have heaven to look forward to. Asaph came back to his faith in God, to trusting God. Will you?
...it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works.
