We Are Not Forsaken
For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
Hebrews 13:5-6
Paul quoted from Deuteronomy 31:6-8 and Joshua 1:5 to encourage the faith of Hebrew believers. The comfort of God’s presence was promised to them. God was their helper, and there was no need to fear anyone.
The words, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” have become a comfort to my heart. After my wife Sharon passed away, I knew that I was not alone, as God’s comforting presence never left me. He has helped me go forward to finish what He has planned for my life. How do the words, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” comfort your hearts today?
God is a promise keeper, so we too can declare: “The Lord is my helper.” Again, who is the one Person who can help you? It is no one else but the Lord. Listen, if God is for you, then who can be against you? No matter what things you are facing in your life, take heart as you agree with what Paul said in Romans 8:31: What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Fear is a cruel master. It can rule and ruin a person’s life. Are you crippled by fear? Who are you afraid of? Listen, the Lord is on your side! He will sustain you. Why should you fear? God has given you a promise that He will never, ever leave you nor forsake you. Nothing on this earth can separate you from God (Romans 8:38-39).
In his message, Paul was referencing two Old Testament psalms believed to be written by King David: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid (Psalm 27:1). The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:6). David had joy and comfort in the knowledge of God’s presence in His life. When you feel hopeless and in despair, He is the light in your darkness. In your seasons of trial, He will strengthen you; and when fear floods your heart, He reassures you of His presence.
The Lord has not forsaken us. Never doubt in the darkness what God has given us in the light. The Lord is with us. He is here now. He will never leave us.
