Forsake Your Former Conduct
But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:20-24
As a Christian, you have a renewed mind. You have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Paul spoke about having a renewed mind. A Christian is to put off the former conduct of the person they used to be and live a new life in Christ:
...put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him (Colossians 3:8-10).
Instead, what should our conduct be like as Christians? Colossians 3:12-15 NIV tells us:
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
God’s Word is to be obeyed; it’s very practical and simple. He expects you to walk in holiness and purity of life. Forsake your old life and walk in newness of life in Christ.
If you think you can walk in holiness without keeping up perpetual fellowship with Christ, you have made a great mistake. If you would be holy, you must live close to Jesus.
