One of the Chosen
“ ‘In that day,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the LORD, ‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
Haggai 2:23
Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, was chosen by God to be His servant. Pastor Chuck Smith thought that it might be possible that Zerubbabel could be chosen as one of the two prophets who would give glory and honor to the Lord, as mentioned in Revelation 11:3: “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
However, most Bible scholars teach that the two witnesses in the Tribulation Period will be Moses, as he was the Lawgiver, who represents the Law of God, and Elijah, a prophet who represents the prophets of God. Chuck also thought of the possibility of Enoch being one of the witnesses. Why? He did not die, but was raptured into heaven: And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:24).
However, all this is a mystery. We really do not know; it could be Moses, Enoch or Zerubbabel, but for sure Elijah, as he is mentioned in Scripture: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD” (Malachi 4:5). Take into consideration that Elijah never died. He was taken to heaven in a chariot of fire: ...a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them [Elisha and Elijah]; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven (2 Kings 2:11).
The Scriptures have given insight into how these men will be treated. They will be hated by people in the world, so much so that they will be killed in Jerusalem; but after three-and-a-half days, as the whole world is watching, they will be resurrected and taken to heaven (Revelation 11:11-12). Thus, the whole world will know God’s judgment will come.
God always has His witnesses. Imagine, we are all to be His witnesses in a world that is growing more hateful and murderous toward Christians.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me [Jesus] in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
~Acts1:8~
