Resisting the Truth

Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.
2 Timothy 3:8-9

In the Old Testament, Jannes and Jambres were two of Pharaoh’s magicians who resisted the truth as God spoke through His servant Moses. The meaning of their names reflects there godless character. Jannes means “full of pleasure,” “favor” or “impoverished,” and Jambres means “opposer” or “the sea with poverty.” As they resisted the truth, ironically, they became impoverished.

In obedience to the Lord, Moses and Aaron went before Pharaoh and performed miracles and wonders and demanded that God’s people be let go! The magicians of Egypt, which most likely included Jannes and Jambres, resisted them. Exodus 7:10-12 states:

So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.  For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

Although these men’s names are not found in the Old Testament, Matthew Henry shared some good insights:

Ancient Jewish writers express extravagant views on Jannes and Jambres, some affirming that they were the sons of Balaam, that were drowned in the Red Sea or were put to death for inciting Aaron to make the golden calf.

Just as Jannes and Jambres chose to reject the truth, the godless men Paul described in the Last Days will also perish. Why? They will resist the truth of the Gospel; they will place no faith in its message. Are you willfully resisting the truth of God’s Word? I would ask that you reconsider your position.

It is the surest proof of man's natural enmity against God that he dares to impute falsehood to one who is truth itself.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
