The Word of God

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

Paul had just finished explaining how to put off the old man and put on the new man to the Ephesian believers. The Word of God was an important factor in renewing their minds. It convicts and instructs. Through prayer and reading the Word, God communicated with each believer individually.

The Word of God is vital to our Christian walk. The psalmist testifies how the Word of God keeps us from sin: Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You (Psalm 119:11). The Word of God is a guide to us: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). It acts as a restrainer: Princes persecute me without a cause, but my heart stands in awe of Your word (Psalm 119:161).

The Word of God is the source of our joy in the life: I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure (Psalm 119:162); and a similar thought is given in Psalm 119:47: ...I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love. Do you love the Word of God? Think about those who despise the Word of God. We cannot live apart from the Word of God!

The Word of God is our standard of conduct; it tells us how to live the Christian life. We can make a difference in this world by our conduct. The Word of God is the source of new life and lives and abides forever (1 Peter 1:22-25). The Word of God is the source of spiritual food (Matthew 4:4). It is important to feed on God’s Word daily if you are going to grow and mature. Make the Word of God a priority in your life.

On one occasion, I was in South Africa for an event hosted by Billy Graham. During the first two days, nobody made contact with me. I thought I was forgotten! I found out later that I was left alone for a specific purpose––to be alone with God. Then He could speak to me and fully prepare me to give the message to the people.

We must allow the Word of God to correct us the same way we allow it to encourage us.
