Walk as Children of Light

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth)....
Ephesians 5:8-9

Paul the Apostle referred to a believer’s past. Before they were in Christ, they were in utter darkness. In the world, they wandered in spiritual blindness––lost. Now in Christ, they are found and become children of the light.

It is impossible to be in darkness and in the light at the same time––it is contradictory. For someone to say they are a Christian and yet live a life in darkness, in close company with those in the world, is to be a liar before God: If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth (1 John 1:6). Let that truth resonate within your heart and mind.

Do you remember what it was like to be in spiritual darkness? As sinners, most of us did terrible things. We lied, cheated, stole, committed adultery, and were drunkards or drug addicts. Some of us were self-righteous hypocrites, unkind, even cruel. Consider the people we have hurt along the way.

Now that we are in Christ, we are to walk as children of the light! God’s light in us produces spiritual fruit––goodness, righteousness and truth. The works of darkness are unfruitful; they lead us to an unfruitful life. Yet those who have given their lives to Christ, and continue to walk in the light, will find that their lives will become incredibly fruitful.

Following [Christ] is walking in the light and not in darkness. Man on account of sin is in moral and spiritual darkness. Believing on Christ and following Him delivers from both. In His fellowship the believer is delivered from the power of darkness, from the power of sin and from ignorance as to spiritual things.
