A Slave of God

But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
Romans 6:22

James was a true servant of God; he understood what it meant to be a servant. The word servant in Greek is doulos: “a slave, one who gives himself up to another’s will––one whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing His cause among men.” James counted the cost and willingly decided that his life would be lived in submission to God. He understood that Christ reigned over his life.

Another word for servant in the Greek language is huperetes, “an underling––as a crewman on a boat, an under-rower, those who man the oars on a lower deck; a subordinate.” We are servants of God. The Lord governs and rules over our lives. We are to be in submission to Him, and sin no longer reigns over our lives. God reigns over us. It is as if we are in the military. When He asks us to do something, our response is obedience. The Lord will teach us to hear His commands and be open to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Seriously, Jesus should always be the first priority in our lives. Jesus taught His disciples not to worry about their needs, “but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). When you place Him first, the Lord takes care of His servants. He will supply all your needs: ...God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

When we come to Christ, we’re no longer the most important person in the world to us; Christ is. Instead of living only for ourselves, we have a higher goal: to live for Jesus.
